Ram has announced that it intends to adopt the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) standardized tow practices for all their full-sized pickup trucks, including the Ram 1500, Ramp 2500 Heavy Duty, and Ram 3500 Heavy Duty. Â 2015 Ram trucks will be the first lineup by any automaker to use these towing specifications.
SAE J2807 towing specifications are intended to "level the playing field" by setting certain performance criteria. Â These criteria, based on real-world conditions, must be met in order for an automaker to claim a given towing capacity for their vehicle. Â Tests included in SAE J2807 include 0-60 MPH acceleration, hill climbs while maintaining speed, and a sway maneuver using aggressive steering input.
SAE J2807 towing capacities for Ram Trucks:
- Ram 1500 V-6 with 3.6-liter gasoline Pentastar - 7,600 pounds
- Ram 1500 V-6 with 3.0-liter EcoDiesel - 9,200 pounds
- Ram 1500 V-8 with 5.7-liter gasoline HEMI - 10,650 pounds
- Ram 2500 V-8 with 6.4-liter gasoline HEMI - 16,300 pounds
